Model-sharing Games: Analyzing Federated Learning Under Voluntary Participation

چکیده

Federated learning is a setting where agents, each with access to their own data source, combine models learned from local create global model. If agents are drawing different distributions, though, federated might produce biased model that not optimal for agent. This means face fundamental question: should they join the or stay model? In this work, we show how situation can be naturally analyzed through framework of coalitional game theory. Motivated by these considerations, propose following game: there heterogeneous players parameters governing distribution and amounts have noisily drawn distribution. Each player's goal obtain minimal expected mean squared error (MSE) on They choice fitting based solely data, combining those some subset other players. Combining reduces variance component more but increases bias because heterogeneity distributions. derive exact MSE values problems in linear regression estimation. We use analyze resulting hedonic theory; study divide into coalitions, set within coalition jointly constructs single case arbitrarily many either "small" "large" amount constructively always exists stable partition coalitions.

Strategy-proof Pareto-improvement under voluntary participation*

We consider a general framework where each agent has an outside option of privately known value. First, we show that if the designer seeks to (weakly) Pareto-improve an individually rational and participation-maximal benchmark mechanism, there is at most one strategy-proof candidate. Consequently, many known mechanisms are on the Pareto frontier of strategy-proof mechanisms. Second, we characte...

Participation in Risk Sharing under Ambiguity

This paper is about (non) participation in efficient risk sharing in an economy where agents have ambiguous beliefs about uncertain states of nature. Ambiguity of beliefs is described by the multiple-prior expected utility model of Gilboa and Schmeidler (1989). The question we ask is whether and how can ambiguous beliefs give rise to some agents not participating in efficient risk sharing. The ...

Test design under voluntary participation and conflicting preferences✩

At issue is the design of a test which can generate a signal about an agent’s quality when the agent is imperfectly informed and his participation in the test is voluntary. The designer strives for information generation, whereas the agent strives for a high quality perception and is averse to information generation. When quality is binary, the optimal test is binary and not subject to false po...

Participation in voluntary organizations

Economic theories explaining participation have focused on individual preferences, private and public failures as explanations for participation in voluntary organizations. These theories do not look at the relevance of the institutions that affect public and market failures that in turn, affect participation. My essay considers and empirically examines the effect those different institutions a...

Analyzing the Aspects of Cross Sharing Ownership

With the growth of capital market, the shareholding structure of companies has become more complex. Direct ownership is easily recognizable through companies’ shareholders information, however with the formation of cross shareholding among companies, a kind of indirect and complex shareholding has emerged which is not observable. The primary owners (original owners) can take over other companie...
